Counterfeiting A Controversial Issue For The Country s...

France Counterfeiting is a big, controversial issue for the country’s apparel industry. Since the fashion industry began, counterfeiting has been an issue for the apparel industry worldwide. France is the strictest country against counterfeiting, â€Å"where half the 8.9 million counterfeit articles seized in 2011, were luxury goods† (Zanuso, 2012). Since France’s fashion industry is the most profitable business in the country, counterfeiting is problematic because it reduces profits, harms their economy, and it cost France thousands of jobs. It also cost France and other European countries millions every year. Since counterfeiting has been produced to resemble an original design, U.S. customs have had a hard time spotting the fakes. Counterfeiting is a multi billion-dollar industry which thrives on the illegal production, selling, and buying of counterfeit goods. The profits â€Å"often support terrorist groups, drug smugglers, sex traffickers and street gangs† (Law, 2015). Since counterfeit goods are illegal, France imposes strict fines and even jail time for those who buy the goods. â€Å"France increased the maximum fine for buying fakes to three times the retail price of the authentic product† (Frost, 2005). Besides fines, high-end fashion brands have taken it upon themselves to launch a poster campaign, in France, to stand up against counterfeiting.
